HANNspree debuts Transflective LCD technology in Hybri monitor
HANNspree Hybri monitor is coming available in Taiwan for pre-order from national telecommunications company Chunghwa Telecom, priced at $29,800 TWD. The pre-sale will launch during Taiwan International Book Exhibition from February 4th to 9th. First deliveries are expected in late-March.
Until now, paper-like displays have mostly been confined to static tasks like reading documents. A few of those displays have reached the crucial 60Hz refresh rate needed for smooth video playback, but Hybri monitor is the first to reach 75Hz, enabling more dynamic multimedia use cases.
Hybri monitor features Transflective LCD (TLCD), a unique type of paper-like display technology that differs significantly from the electrophoretic displays found in most e-readers. TLCD shares similarities with Reflective LCD (RLCD) made from a liquid crystal layer sandwiched between polarizing and reflective layers. TLCD stands apart due to micro-perforations in its reflective layer that allow an LED-backlight to pass through it, much like a traditional LCD.

Hybri monitor's proprietary TLCD technology boasts an impressive 75Hz refresh rate, 5ms response time, and true 8-bit color depth with 16.7 million colors. This ensures a vibrant, Full HD experience for both video watching and gaming. Plus, in its purely reflective mode, the monitor offers paper-like eye comfort, making it perfect for prolonged use and increased productivity. The reflective mode works best in environments with over 1000 lux of ambient light, while its flicker-free backlight should be activated when ambient light drops below that range.
USA Today's Reviewed Awards recognized a prototype of Hybri Monitor as one of its four best electronics products at IFA 2024. “There's a lot of excellent computer monitors for gaming and productivity. But it's not often we see anything you'd consider a breakthrough in the category. That's why we are excited to see the debut of Hannspree's Ecovision monitors at IFA.”
