For years, using a conventional computer screen had been a painful experience for Travis. Severe eye strain meant that even short periods in front of an LCD display could cause significant discomfort, forcing him to find an alternative. 
 

As a senior software and AI engineer, however, avoiding screens altogether was never an option. Travis needed to code, write and study every day, so four years ago he turned to a small 13-inch E-Ink monitor. It solved one problem but created others. When conventional screens became impossible

“For the past 5 years, I have suffered with very severe eye pain in response to emissive LCD display, this can be any screen that projects light directly into the eyes (OLED, CRT, laser projector). Because of this I am completely unable to use a regular computer, TV or mobile phone.” 
 

As a senior software and AI engineer, Travis spends much of his working life coding and writing. E-Ink had provided a solution that allowed him to continue working, but it came with significant compromises. 
 

“Instead, I have used a small 13" E-Ink monitor for work and studying. I work as a senior software and AI engineer so most of my work is coding and writing and this worked fine and solved my eye strain, but I would still experience difficulties with the small screen size for simultaneous workflows, regularly made colour editing mistakes in documents because the screen was black and white and I could not use the display for any kind of multimedia.” 
 

The limitations of E-Ink were becoming increasingly difficult to live with. What Travis needed was a display that could provide the eye comfort he had found with E-Ink, but without sacrificing colour, size or responsiveness, and that was what appealed about the HANNspree Hybri. “I was very drawn to the Hannspree Hybri monitor because it was a very good size, full colour and responds like a regular LCD. The difference between using a conventional LCD and Hybri has been particularly striking for Travis. 
 

“It's a night and day difference for me, I get severe pain after about 30 seconds of regular LCD use, if I continue for say an hour the pain is unbearable and will last several days. With the Hybri monitor my eyes are comfortable and experience no strain or discomfort, it's like reading from a piece of paper or looking out of a window.” 
 

For someone who had spent years adapting his working environment around eye discomfort, that change has been transformative. 
 

Sharing is caring

Having found a solution that works for him, Travis has already started recommending Hybri to others who experience similar difficulties. 
 

“I have already recommended it to my best friend who is a writer who also suffers from migraines and he is going to try and get one through work, also someone in my office has asked about what brand and model my monitor is, I think he also wants to get one.”

Part of what makes Hybri stand out for Travis is the combination of size and eye-friendly viewing that he had struggled to find elsewhere. 
 

“It's much larger than any truly eye friendly screen at this price point and is of very high quality. I compare it to playing the Nintendo GameBoy Advance as that also has a transflective screen and also doesn't give me any eye strain, it basically feels like a giant HD GameBoy.” 
 

The transflective display also performs particularly well in natural daylight, an environment where many conventional screens can struggle with reflections and glare. Travis comments: 
 

“Very good, no glare, the colour reproduction looks amazing in daylight, I'd say it's the optimal way to use the monitor.” 
 

A display for everyone

After years of having to compromise on how he uses technology, his recommendation is unequivocal. 
 

“Honestly everyone, because I think purely emissive screens are not good for peoples' eyes generally and almost everyone these days has to spend hours looking at LCDs for work or on their phone, so I would save yourself the pain and undue strain on your eyes and use this instead as your daily driver.” 
 

Hybri isn't simply an alternative monitor. It has given Travis back the ability to use a modern, full-colour display without the compromises he had accepted as part of everyday life. And when asked to sum up the experience in one sentence, his answer says it all:
