Lumo 7.8"- Customer Story, Mr Ralph-Donaldson
Finding the HANNspree 7.8" Lumo Tablet When Eye-Care is Your no.1 Priority
“Perfect eye friendly portable computer for work and leisure.”
For some, choosing an eye-friendly display isn't a matter of preference. For our customer, Travis, after years of severe eye pain caused by conventional emissive displays, finding technology that allows him to work, communicate, and enjoy digital content without discomfort has become essential.
As a senior software and AI engineer who also develops mobile apps, Travis needs his technology to be capable and responsive, but his experience with conventional displays has meant that finding devices that combine performance with eye comfort has been a constant challenge. HANNspree Lumo has given him another option.
A portable, full-colour Android tablet with HANNspree's TLCD technology, Lumo allows Travis to take an eye-friendly display beyond his desk, whether he's working, checking messages, testing mobile apps, gaming or watching videos.
A second computer without the eye strain
Travis has found Lumo particularly useful as an extension of his working setup, pairing it with a Bluetooth keyboard to create a portable second computer.
“I use it for Claude Code remote workflows as a second computer with a Bluetooth keyboard.”
For someone who spends much of his working life coding, the ability to have a portable screen that doesn't trigger the eye discomfort he experiences with conventional displays is particularly valuable.
But Lumo isn't simply a work device. Its combination of responsiveness, colour and portability means Travis can also use it for the everyday activities that would otherwise be difficult to enjoy on an eye-friendly display.
Working and gaming without compromise
One of the biggest advantages Travis has found is Lumo's versatility. He can use it as a conventional Android tablet, but without having to compromise on eye comfort.
“I combined it with a tablet gaming controller so I can play video games on the move. It's also great for using regular android apps like checking emails and WhatsApp, as I don't currently own a phone I can look at without eye strain so I use this with Wifi or over a portable hotspot.”
For Travis, this means Lumo can fill a gap that conventional eye-friendly devices haven't been able to, giving him access to everyday digital life while remaining aligned with the eye-care priorities that determine which displays he can use.
The real difference
The contrast with conventional tablets, and even other eye-friendly technologies, is particularly noticeable when it comes to responsiveness and colour.
“A night and day difference for me, I develop mobile apps so this a great testing device as it has full colour reproduction and is very responsive unlike my e-ink tablet. It reminds me of reading on my old Palm Pilot from the 2000's.”
That combination is important because Travis doesn't simply want a display that is easier on his eyes. He needs one that can keep up with the way he works and the things he wants to do.
Solving the limitations of E-Ink
Before discovering HANNspree's RLCD technology, E-Ink had provided Travis with an important eye-friendly alternative, but it couldn't deliver everything he needed from a modern portable device.
“There are no eye friendly tablets like e-ink that can play videos smoothly, and are responsive enough for gaming.”
Lumo bridges that gap by combining the characteristics Travis values in an eye-friendly display with the performance and versatility expected from a modern tablet. This means being able to enjoy activities that previously required a compromise.
Life without Lumo
When asked what Travis would miss the most if he didn't have Lumo, his answer follows the recurring theme throughout Travis's experience with HANNspree's eye-friendly technology: being able to enjoy digital content without having to choose between comfort and capability.
“Playing games and watching videos at full fidelity with zero eye strain.”
It is a simple benefit, but one that has made a significant difference to how Travis can use technology in his everyday life. Asked how he would describe Lumo to someone else, he keeps it equally simple:
“Perfect eye friendly portable computer for work and leisure.”
One eye-care solution, two displays
Lumo is now part of a wider HANNspree setup for Travis. Travis first discovered the Hybri monitor which he found could provide the full-colour, responsive display experience he had been missing without triggering the eye strain associated with conventional screens. After six weeks of intensive daily use, he reported no eye pain and described the experience as “a dream come true.” You can read about Travis's experience with Hybri, here.
With Lumo, he now has that same focus on eye comfort in a portable format, giving him a way to work, communicate and enjoy entertainment wherever he is, without having to return to the compromises of E-Ink.
For Travis, the appeal of HANNspree's RLCD technology is ultimately about freedom: the freedom to use modern displays without having to sacrifice the activities, performance and experiences he wants from them.
The exciting future of TLDC / RLCD
Having experienced the benefits of HANNspree's advanced TLCD technology through both Lumo and HANNspree Hybri, Travis is particularly excited about where the underlying technology could go next.
“The core technology, I find really exciting because it has all the benefits of a regular LCD, like really good colour reproduction, no ghosting, low latency and a fast response time which are all limitations of competitive devices like e-ink in the eye care space.”
For Travis, the potential extends beyond personal devices. He is also interested in how TLCD/RLCD could evolve to make even better use of ambient light.
“I am excited to see how far the technology can be pushed to improve ambient light reflectivity and smooth diffusion over the screen surface. I use mine without the backlight, so improving this quality would be a great addition in the future.”
He also sees potential applications well beyond computers and tablets.
“I also hope these devices become much more pervasive and are used for things like POS and outdoor signage, I imagine they save a lot more on electricity if in ambient mode, which could have broad environmental benefits.”
