Lumo 7.8" - Customer Story, Nathan Turner

One Month with the HANNspree Lumo 7.8" from a Former e-Ink User

“I am really enjoying using your Lumo 7.8, which I have had for about a month now. I think you are taking RLCD tech in a very promising direction and would like to encourage you to continue.”

Discovering Lumo

“I think I came across the Lumo on Reddit but it could have been Youtube. I later saw a number of reviews which encouraged me to give it a try.
One in particular was by the YouTuber Kit Betts-Masters.”

Please do watch Kit's Lumo review.

After a month of using Lumo, Nathan noticed the difference. “Being able to use a fully-responsive, colour screen that is gentle on the eyes and that I can work with out and about in full daylight, as well as indoors without strain thanks to the even front light.”

For Nathan, the appeal of Lumo can be summed up simply:

“Lumo is a novel device which combines the viewing ease of e-ink with the immediacy of a normal Android LCD tablet.”

A screen that feels different

“The feeling of using the Lumo's screen is more akin to e-ink than traditional LCD, and much less tiring than the latter; my eyes feel fresher in general. One benefit I particularly appreciate is finding I can use the Lumo at night and still sleep, just like a front lit e-ink device. In general, the device is not as vivid as most LCD/OLED screens, but for me this is actually a plus, as I find the strong colours of many modern screens too intense. Since I've had the Lumo, I've been able to reduce my laptop use to a minimum, and when I do go back, I find the screen glare hard to adjust to. Finally, the "addictive" quality of content on a backlit screen disappears: I find myself able to engage with and disengage from content much more consciously and easily, which is something I had previously only found with e-ink.”

The difference is particularly noticeable when compared with a conventional tablet:  “I have been using e-ink readers for many years but had been lacking a device that allowed me to use general Android apps more easily, particularly for tasks where higher refresh rates without ghosting are necessary, such as word processing or video. As a lot of my work involves text production, editing and correction, having the Lumo has minimized the amount of time I spend looking at a backlit screen.”

One device for work, reading and entertainment

The Lumo has quickly become a versatile part of Nathan's everyday life: “As well as word-processing and note-taking, I mostly use it for reading online content, listening to podcasts, and watching videos. I enjoy learning languages and watch several hours of input a day. This was incredibly tiring on a backlit LCD device, and impractical on my e-ink devices. The RLCD display strikes a pleasing balance between the natural softness of e-ink and the refresh of traditional LCD/LED screens.” And when it comes to natural daylight, the verdict is simple:

“Very enjoyable.”

Lumo really comes into its own

“There are times, for example I am sitting outside on a terrace in bright sunlight or on a bus, when the calm, clear colours seem particularly beautiful - almost like watching a video on printed paper. I think the screen really comes into its own outdoors and lends itself to use with a pocket-sized device like the Lumo 7.8.”

That combination of portability, daylight readability and a more comfortable viewing experience has made the Lumo particularly useful for multimedia and mobile working.

“I would recommend the Lumo to anybody who reads a lot of multimedia content such as pdfs or online newspapers/magazines, to anybody who watches a lot of media, or anybody who needs a portable device for basic office-related tasks when working outside.”

Struggling with eye strain?

For anyone who finds conventional screens tiring, Nathan sees Lumo as an accessible alternative to e-ink:

“I would definitely recommend they try Hannspree's RLCD products; the frontlight solves lighting issues without being intrusive, and the immediacy of the response and the standard Android operating system make the device easily accessible to people might be put off by the restrictions of e-ink.”

After a month of use, there is one thing above all that Nathan would miss if he no longer had his Lumo:

“The possibility of writing and watching content without exhausting my eyes.”

Looking ahead: the potential of RLCD

For this customer, the experience with Lumo has affirmed a bigger question about how we use technology.

Nathan comments: “After using the Lumo for a month, I feel RLCD technology has the potential to make a very positive contribution to how we use and interact with our day-to-day tech. How and why we use technology is one of the most hotly-contested debates at present, and our screens are clearly the main factor in how we interact with technology and process information. Unfortunately, many current devices prioritize colour intensity and attractiveness over usability; to my mind, there is a real need for companies who instead focus on the overall quality of life which their devices afford customers, allowing them to think and create rather than merely consume.
